Second Chances is a registered Scottish charity who's volunteer base is growing steadily.  Covering most of scotland, and the north of England, the chairty strives to find permenant caring homes for unwanted, unloved, abused German Shepherds.

Both Zak and Kemsie came to us through Second Chances, Zakkie just before chirstmas and Kemsie a few months later. Zak had not be abused as you normally class abuse, but he had been neglected.  Kemsie came to us under better circumstances, because of a marital breakup.

I became a volunteer with Second Chances by accident really.  After we had a home check done we were asked if we would do a home check ourselves, as the address was nearby and no one was coming up in this area for a while.  So I said yes and have never regretted it.  As yet I have only had to turn one person down, and have not come into contact with any abused dogs, YET!  I am fully aware that there will come a time when I have to assess a dog who is or has been abused, unfortunalty there are people out there who shouldnt' even own an insect never mind a dog, and especially a Shepherd.  People in 5th floor flats get them, then wonder why the dog is destructive as it gets older, and has no exercise or attention, young men see the dog as a power symbol, they think it makes them look big and clever if they can control, and even abused these dogs, known for their aggression, and some people are just plain cruel and ought to be locked away.

Not all dogs who come to the rescue are abused.  Some come to us because of marital breakdowns, like Kemsie, some come people work commitments change, or the health of the owner deteriorates to a stage where he or she can no longer look after, but the fact is that all these dogs deserve a Second Chance.  for more information onthe charity or how you can become a volunteer, raise funds or become a foster home for these wonderful dogs, visit The Second-Chances Website.
